A Program of Financial Support for Exploration
of Innovations in Teaching and Technology
Funded by SUNY FACT2

Submission Deadline - September 15

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the State University of New York, through the Faculty Advisory Council on Teaching and Technology (FACT2), takes great pleasure in announcing funding for Innovation Grants (formerly known as Conferences on Computing in the Disciplines or COCID grants). Proposals are invited from individuals, and departments from one or more of the 64 campuses in SUNY -- community colleges, colleges of technology, specialized colleges, and university centers.

The intent of these grants is to fund inter-campus activities and events that will result in opportunities for training and professional development of faculty and staff. The purpose is to encourage the gathering and exchange of ideas among SUNY personnel and visiting resource persons to examine new trends and developments in teaching and technology. Grant recipients, in addition to using funding to execute their proposal, are expected to attend the Conference on Instruction and Technology and provide a poster, presentation or moderated discussion that will:

  1. Provide an overview of the topic presented.
  2. Enable conference participants to learn more about the funded activity.

The application should clearly indicate which of the following models is planned:

  1. Hosting a conference, workshop, symposium or forum for discussion on a new or emerging instructional technology issue.
  2. Conducting research (survey, field study, etc.) to contribute new knowledge to the field of teaching and learning.

A goal of the innovation grants is to encourage the SUNY community to address advisory priorities identified by the SUNY Provost. All proposals are welcome, but those proposals that demonstrate support of FACT2 Task Groups or other initiatives in support of the SUNY Strategic Plan will be given funding preference.

Current advisory initiatives and priorities include:

Award Amounts

This current round of grants will not exceed $5,000 per award.

Campuses applying for an innovation grant under this program will engage faculty, staff, students, and administrators from all 64 SUNY campuses. The program may include other non-SUNY groups or interested individuals as appropriate. Grant funds should be used to cover program costs for SUNY participants.

Review of Applications

The FACT2 Advisory Council will coordinate the review of applications under this program. The Council will establish procedures to select reviewers, distribute applications, receive reviews, and make awards. Proposal Evaluation Guidelines

Proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Relevance to the current FACT2 advisory initiatives - The proposal addresses a current or recent Task Group topic, and clearly outlines how the proposed activity will help further understanding of the advisory priorities.
  2. Feasibility - The proposed plan must show that the program is realistic in its implementation, scope and aims. The clarity of presentation of the program is critical in evaluating the proposal. Evidence of organization and technical planning are important.
  3. Principal Investigator(s) - The qualifications, both professional and technical, of the proposed speakers, panelists, discussants, demonstrators, and other presenters are considered important. For this reason, a paragraph noting both career achievements and technical competence of proposed presenters should be included within the proposal.
  4. Participants - Indicates the anticipated total participation from within SUNY and from other institutions.
  5. Publication - FACT2 encourages publication of Innovation Grant Outcomes. Reasonable publication costs may be included in the proposed budget.
  6. Activity Promotion - The host institution is expected to send communications of the program or activity to all 64 SUNY campuses. Additionally, in order to facilitate reaching the largest possible SUNY audience, the CPD will distribute communications to the CPD lists, FACT2 campus representatives, and others within SUNY who they can reach. An electronic copy of the communication must be provided to the CPD for distribution.
  7. Crediting and Coordinating with FACT2 - Program or activity announcements should credit FACT2 for support or partial support and should display the FACT2 logo which is available from the CPD. The FACT2 Advisory Council will assign one of its members to serve as liaison between the FACT2 Advisory Council and the host campus. The liaison should be included in all program communications and receive a complimentary registration to any event where they will offer welcoming remarks to the other participants on behalf of FACT2.
  8. Benefits - The program or activity should provide outcomes or results that contribute to the work of one of the FACT2 Task Groups.
  9. Budget - The proposed budget should be as specific as possible concerning honoraria**; travel expenses, including meals and lodging, or visiting resource persons; registration fee schedule; secretarial services; rental of equipment; use of hardware; and other costs. Include an estimate of the campus contribution. The proposed budget must be consistent with the stated objectives of the conference.
[**Official SUNY policy regarding honoraria will apply: $0/day paid to SUNY faculty presenting at his/her home campus; $100/day paid to SUNY faculty presenting at another SUNY campus.]
  10. Timeline - The proposal should contain a timeline reflecting all aspects of the program or activity. This includes CIT presentation and final budget and outcomes reporting.
  11. Other Considerations - Any academic department or interested organization on a campus or within SUNY state-operated and community colleges may develop a proposal for an Innovation Grant and submit it through appropriate campus channels for possible support. Joint proposals from more than one campus are encouraged.
  12. Provide a Statement of Program Outcomes.
  13. Provide a Communication Plan for disseminating information learned/gathered from the program in scholarly publications or communications.

Reports

The FACT2 Admisory Council requires an evaluation report from each funded activity in order to help in its selection of future proposals. The evaluation report will be due by June 30th. It should consist of the following:

  1. Evaluation of the program by its proposer covering attainment of goals, special problems encountered, adequacy of financing, etc.
  2. Copies of any program details and documents, a list of participants, and the campuses represented.
  3. Additional brief comments by other participants as appropriate, including suggestions or "lessons learned" that may be helpful to future applicants.
  4. Information on how the outcomes will be presented at CIT (poster, discussion or presentation).
  5. A final accounting budget report on how funds were expended.
  6. CIT abstract submission.

Submit reports by email to Lisa Miles Raposo, SUNY Center for Professional Development.
