Conferences on Computing in the Disciplines

(COCID)

A Program of Financial Support for Inter-Campus Scholarly Conferences on Computing
Funded by SUNY FACT

Submission Deadline - March 1, 2008

The SUNY Faculty Access to Computing Technology (FACT) Initiative program provides financial support for intercampus scholarly conferences through their Conferences on Computing in the Disciplines (COCID) program.

The Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs of the State University of New York, through the Faculty Access to Computing Technology (FACT) Advisory Council, takes great pleasure in announcing her continuing sponsorship of Conferences on Computing in the Disciplines. Proposals are invited from individuals, and departments from one or more of the 64 campuses in SUNY -- community colleges, colleges of technology, specialized colleges, and university centers.

It is intended that these conferences will be inter-campus events for training and professional development of faculty and staff within academic disciplines. They will bring together SUNY personnel and visiting resource persons to examine new trends and developments in the use of technology for instruction and research. The application should clearly indicate which of the following models is planned:

  1. The application and integration of instructional technology into the instruction and/or research of a specific academic discipline.
  2. The broader use of instructional technology across several academic disciplines.

A goal of the conferences will be to expand communication within SUNY about the issues of integrating computing and other emerging technologies, such as networking and multimedia, into higher education curricula in order to support instruction and research at the participating campuses.

Amount to be Awarded

A sum not to exceed $5,000 will be made available to help support each approved conference.

Participants

Campuses hosting a conference under this program will invite faculty, staff, students, and administrators from all 64 SUNY units. The conference may be opened to other groups or interested individuals on a space-available basis. SUNY participants may be charged a nominal registration fee. Others will be expected to pay a fee.

Review of Applications

The FACT Advisory Council will coordinate the review of applications under this program. The Council will establish procedures to select reviewers, distribute applications, receive reviews, and make awards.

Closing Dates

The committee will conduct reviews throughout the year. Closing date will be March 1st for conferences to be held through the following academic year.

Notification

Applicants will be notified of the results no later than six weeks after the closing date.

Guidelines

For assistance in preparing your COCID Application, please contact Lisa Miles Raposo at lmraposo@tc.suny.edu.

  1. Facilitation of Professional Development -- This is the major purpose of a conference. A strong proposal will demonstrate its value in the focus of the topic chosen, show awareness of the issues in the field, be timely, and have clearly stated objectives. The emphases of the program should be upon professional development in curricular, instructional and scholarly matters, rather than upon administrative matters.
  2. Feasibility -- The proposed plan must show that the program is realistic in its implementation, scope, and aims. The clarity of presentation of the program is critical in evaluating the proposal. Evidence of organization and technical planning are important. Conferences should last at least one full day.
  3. Presenters -- The qualifications, both professional and technical, of the proposed speakers, panelists, discussants, demonstrators, and other presenters are considered important. For this reason, a paragraph noting both career achievements and technical competence of proposed presenters should be included within the proposal.
  4. Participants -- Indicate the anticipated total participation from within SUNY and from other institutions.
  5. Publication -- FACT encourages publication of conference proceedings. Reasonable publication costs may be included in the proposed budget.
  6. Conference Promotion -- It is expected that the host institution will send announcements of the conference program to all 64 SUNY campuses. In addition to others the host campus may choose, the list should include the corresponding faculty chairs of each campus. Additionally, in order to facilitate reaching the largest possible SUNY audience, the SUNY Training Center will provide mailing labels for academic deans, FACT campus representatives, and others within SUNY who should be informed of each conference. An electronic copy of the conference announcement must be provided to the SUNY Training Center for distribution on FACT-L and other lists.
  7. Crediting and Coordinating with FACT -- Conference announcements should credit FACT for support or partial support of the conference and should display the FACT logo which is available from the SUNY Training Center. The FACT Advisory Council will assign one of its members to serve as liaison between the FACT Advisory Council and the host campus. The liaison should receive a complimentary registration to attend the conference and will offer welcoming remarks to the other conference participants on behalf of FACT.
  8. Benefits -- The conference should be of direct benefit to members of the SUNY faculty and instructional support staff, and of indirect benefit to members of the student body.
  9. Budget -- The proposed budget should be as specific as possible concerning honoraria**; travel expenses, including meals and lodging, of visiting resource persons; registration fee schedule; secretarial services; rental of equipment, use of hardware, and other costs. Include an estimate of the campus contribution. The proposed budget must be consistent with the stated objectives of the conference.[** Official SUNY policy regarding honoraria will apply: $0/day paid to SUNY faculty presenting at his/her home campus; $100/day paid to SUNY faculty presenting at another SUNY campus.]
  10. Timeline-- The proposal should contain a timeline reflecting the development of the conference.
  11. Other Considerations -- Any academic department or interested organization on a campus or within SUNY state-operated and community colleges may develop a proposal for planning and hosting a conference, and submit it through appropriate campus channels for possible support. Joint proposals from more than one department or campus, or proposals that use SUNYSAT, are encouraged. Hands-on activities are encouraged where appropriate.
  12. Provide a Statement of Conference Outcomes.
  13. Provide a Communication Plan for disseminating information learned / gathered at the COCID, in Scholarly Publications or Communications.

Reports

The FACT Advisory Council requires an evaluation report from each funded conference in order to help in its selection of future proposals. The Council hopes that these reports will underscore the worth of the program and help support its continuation. The evaluation report will be due six weeks from the date of the conference. It should consist of the following:

  1. Evaluation of the conference by its proposer covering attainment of goals, special problems encountered, adequacy of financing, etc.
  2. Copies of any publicity or brochure circulated, the conference program, a list of participants, and the campuses represented.
  3. Additional brief comments by other participants and planners, as seems appropriate.
  4. Information and suggestions on planning and procedures which might be useful to organizers of future conferences under this program.
